Divergent by Veronica Roth

Genre:  YA Dystopian
Divergent Series, Book 1

Description (taken from Veronica Roth's website):
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves… or it might destroy her.

I've finally read it...  The book that's been sitting on my shelf for the longest.  And I enjoyed it.  Granted it was a little weird and bizarre.  Entering a world where mottos like "Faction over blood" and such is just hard for me to think about.  And I had a very hard time in the beginning with Tris because she showed absolutely no emotion.

Tris grew up in Abnegation where you devote your life to helping others.  Anything and everything you do is for someone else, not yourself.  And if I were in her shoes, I'd want to get out as soon as possible also.  Because I'm really selfish...  But thinking about the factions, I'd probably best fit in with the Erudites because I very much value knowledge.  But back to the book, I found the plot predictable, and I do have a few predictions for the next book.  Also, I never really understood what "divergent" meant.

What did I love about this book?  Th dynamic between Tris and Four.  Absolutely loved how that played out.  And the ending.  My eyes were pretty much glued to the book from halfway on to the end. I think all fans of dystopians would enjoy this read (and probably not get as hung up on some things as I did).  And I'm definitely planning to read the second one because I feel this series is only going to get better with each book.

  2. I LOVED Tris and Four! They had a great relationship and build. The world building was weird but I found the factions unique and attention holding. I loved it and I am so excited to read the sequel. I haven't had a chance yet.

  3. I guess the world in Divergent is kinda a little bit weird to get used to (it's almost like a large-scale version of Hogwarts and its houses don't you think?) but I LOVE Divergent!! It's one of my favourite books!!! I flew through Insurgent a couple of days ago, and unlike some other series it didn't suffer from 'second book syndrome' but, like you predicted, got even better! :D
