Author Interview: Felicity Heaton

Q:  Favorite coffee shop beverage?

A:  I’m a huge fan of the caramel macchiato.

Q:  Contemporary or fantasy?

A:  Fantasy every time. I like to get away from the world and slipping into a nice fantasy book or something fantasy based on TV or in a movie is a perfect escape.

Q:  When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A:  I was always looking at my feet or looking at the stars, because I could never decide whether I wanted to be an archaeologist or an astronaut.

Q:  Mountains or Beach?

A:  Mountains most of the time, as I really love the wilderness and the savage beauty of nature, and mountains always seem to encompass that sense of “wild” for me, but I have been known to enjoy a nice beach holiday, normally mixed with some local culture and beautiful old cities. My reason for hitting the beach is purely about snorkeling though. I’m not the type of girl to sunbathe with a book. I would rather be swimming with the fish.

Q:  What degree did you graduate with?

A:  I graduated with a degree in Graphic Design, which I now put to fantastic use when I’m designing all my books covers, advertising graphics, and also building my own website and newsletters.

Q:  Summer or Winter?

A:  I really like winter. Don’t get me wrong, I do love summer sunshine and blue skies. It always puts a smile on my face. I like the snow side of winter. We don’t get much of it in the UK and so I’m drawn to it. Sitting curled up in the warm while it’s a howling snow storm outside has a certain appeal.

Q:  Favorite sport to play? Watch?

A:  Favourite sport to play is archery. I’m a keen archer and shoot recurve bow, but my schedule has been too hectic to allow much practice this year. My favourite sport to watch is football, which seems to get called soccer everywhere outside Europe.

Q:  Vampire or werewolf?

A:  Vampires. I’ve always been a huge fan of vampires, and whenever I’m presented with this choice, I have to stick with them. I love werewolves too, and write both of those paranormal species, but I always have to go with my first love.

Q:  Favorite book?

A:  Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I love the whole concept of love overcoming adversity.

Q:  Describe your book in two sentences.

A:  Tempted by a Rogue Prince is a heart-wrenching paranormal romance about Vail, an elf prince on the verge of losing himself to darkness after enduring forty-two centuries under the control of a dark witch and forced to war with his brother, and Rosalind, a light witch who is brought to heal him when he’s captured by demons and a woman with a terrible prediction hanging over her head. They have to learn to trust each other in order to escape captivity and overcome Vail’s past and Rosalind’s fated future if they are to seize their forever after.

Q:  Who is your book meant to be read by?

A:  Adult fans of the paranormal romance genre and readers of authors such as Lara Adrian, Larissa Ione, Kresley Cole, Donna Grant, Laura Kaye, Sherrilyn Kenyon and Gena Showalter.

Q:  Who was your favorite character to write about?

A:  Vail. Since beginning the Eternal Mates series with Kissed by a Dark Prince in November 2013, I have fallen deeply in love with Vail. He’s broken and tormented by the things he has done, but not beyond redemption. I’ve been looking forward to writing this book and giving him a brighter future with his fated mate, setting him on the path towards being healed and leading a normal life again. Writing his book really was everything I had expected it to be—a very emotional journey. He made me cry a few times, and readers have blamed me for a tissue shortage in their houses because of this book. Now, I'm looking forward to catching up with him in future books in the Eternal Mates series.

I currently live in Yorkshire, England, and have always enjoyed writing stories which would take people to different, magical worlds.

We were helping put away the paints Mrs Baxter had used in her last lesson to express how colours can change the mood, appearance and message of a piece of art, when Dara walked in to get some pencils. ‘Hi ladies - slogging away as usual, I see! Are you doing this to get a higher grade? If you are, move over and let me get in on it!’ she joked as she pushed Lily aside and started helping to tidy her section. As Lily nearly fell to the floor, we all started laughing and Dara helped her up.

Mrs Baxter came in and gave Dara an extra task to do before she went back to her own classroom; with that she bade us farewell and we continued to clean the room.

Busying myself washing the pots, I almost didn’t notice Lily’s bright red face as her gaze seemingly froze, focused on the door. ‘Did you hurt yourself?’ I asked, concerned that maybe Dara had nudged her too hard. ‘No, no. I’m okay,’ Lily responded as she snapped out of her daydream and started to look for something else to clean. I tried to ignore it, but her manner had changed.

She was quieter than usual and she seemed distant and slightly upset. ‘Lily, it’s clear that something’s not quite right,’ I broached the subject as I sat her down and cupped her hands in mine. ‘We’re supposed to be friends. You know you can tell me anything,’ I added quietly, just in case we weren’t alone.

She looked around the room to check she was safe but just as she was about to speak out, she shook her head and responded, ‘Really it’s nothing.’

Sensing she was lying, I continued to question. I followed her around the room and refused to let it go until I saw a slightly brighter Lily - the Lily that I knew and enjoyed being around. ‘I won’t let this rest until you tell me.Maybe I can help?’ I supposed as I spun her round to face me. This was my big mistake.

The room went dark and the once-clear skies turned gloomy and sinister. Wind began to howl at the now shaking windows of the room and her face immediately morphed from that of a young, beautiful, dainty girl to that of a red-eyed hag with veins pulsing, radiating electrical bolts with her every move. The room began to shake and the door was slammed shut as I tried to escape.

The rage seemed to be very specifically limited to the classroom; no one came to help me when I screamed, so I sat down on the floor and thought whether I could possibly use my own powers to save me from this banshee.

She came towards me, firing bolts at the tables, disintegrating everything in her path, and was finally stood face to face, in front of me.

With my head between my knees, I could feel the energy pulsing from her as I raised my arms to create a force field around myself.

I stood up, ready to fight back, but was distracted when I found she wasn’t attacking me. Instead, she just stood there and began to cry. Without moving or speaking, I watched, waiting for her fry me; she merely fell to the floor and with her crying, she began to flood the floor around her.

The torrent of tears showed no sign of ceasing and I realised that if I didn’t do something quickly, we would drown with minutes. ‘Please don’t cry. What’s wrong, Lily?’ I begged as she finally started to resemble the pretty teenager I remembered.

I went over to hug her and was relieved she responded in kind and didn’t try to attack me.

She looked round and assessed the damage, as if reading my mind. ‘Don’t worry about it. That was one of the first spells I learned - mum is always trying to get me to clean my room when I really just want to go out,’ I joked, as I convinced her I could use magic to put the room back to normal before anyone came back.

With her head in my arms, we sat on the floor in silence for a few minutes, waiting. When I could bear it no longer, I delicately broached the topic again. ‘So, do you want to tell me why you went psycho-fairy on me?’ I laughed, attempting to lighten the mood. She chuckled in response, and lifted her head to look at me.

I backed away slightly as I nervously waited for her answer. ‘I’m sorry I’m just finding this fairy stuff really hard. Sometimes when I’m stressed I can’t control it. Normally I’m fine, but-’ she confessed, leaving me with more questions than when I started.

I paced myself and allowed her to get herself back together before I continued. ‘What made you so stressed? Was it me?’ I asked as I quickly whispered my spell. I prayed it had worked and the room was back in order.

She shook her head and came over to give me a hug and apologise for scaring me.

After confirming I was okay (I said that I just cared about her wellbeing), she looked me in the eye, cupped her hands around my head and said gravely, ‘You are my best friend. I’m so happy to have met you - but you cannot help me with this. I don’t want to get you involved.’

I looked at her with a puzzled expression and tried to assure her I would always be there for her, at which she turned away from me: ‘We are from different circles and have different problems. You want to get out of your circle because you are sick of your life revolving around marriage. I can’t cope with being in my circle because they won’t accept me for being the person I am’.

Sick of the riddles, I began to get annoyed and didn’t realise that I’d snapped slightly at her. ‘And who are you?’

Before I could apologise for my tone, she spun round and faced me with a stony, determined glare, and went on: ‘I’m a gay fairy. I’ll be sent away - or worse - if I express my feelings for Dara.’

Before I could wipe the shocked expression from my face, Mrs Baxter entered the classroom, thanked us for our hard work and dismissed us. Stunned, shaken and dazed at my best friend’s revelation, I silently walked out a pace or two ahead of Lily, leading us straight into a group of foreboding vampires.

A group of four boys stood in our path, refusing to move. I could sense this wasn’t going to be an easy one to escape. ‘So, what are you two doing alone together? Are you the rebels of your circles?’ one of the boys mocked glancing at the other three. They all started to edge closer.

I looked at Lily and was surprised to see her standing her ground and refusing to move back. Feeling considerably less confident than my compatriot, I grabbed her hand and prayed for Mrs Baxter to come out and ask us to help her with something she had forgotten to do.

But there was nothing.

The boys continued to ridicule us for being without our circle members. With every word, they edged closer to us until our backs were tight against the hallway wall and I could feel the breath of the ringleader on my cheek. ‘What do you want from us?’ Lily asked boldly, as the ringleader opened his mouth - we both saw the shine of the daggers.

They all laughed as the fear began to show on our faces; they poked and jibed at us like we were pieces of meat from their latest kill.

Seeing the ringleader’s eyes glow an intimidating yellow, I knew at this point I would never see my family again. I closed my eyes and began to sob helplessly; I had missed the new drama that was occurring around me.

Prying myself from my blind, fearful state, I felt a flurry of air and slowly opened my eyes just in time to see the ringleader go flying, as if in slow-motion, through the air and clatter into the row of lockers on the opposite side of the hallway.

He lay there for a few minutes, dazed and confused, as his followers went to help him up.

Unable to see the cause, I grabbed Lily and took advantage of our release from these blood-suckers and, trying to ignore the sounds of battle behind us; we kept our heads firmly down and ran towards the main exit.

Just as I put my hand on the door handle to make our break for freedom, all went silent.

I simply couldn’t go through the door without looking over my shoulder.

‘Don’t look back! Open the door!’ Lily screamed frantically as tried to drag me through the exit. Nevertheless, I turned my head slowly to catch a glimpse.

It looked like a battleground.

I could not see the casualties through all the blood but I knew from my research of vampires in ‘The Ancient Codex’, it would take a lot more than tears of the skin, deep wounds or even oceans of blood to kill such resilient beings.

I was satisfied that we were out of harm’s way but somehow my mind jolted back to self-defence as I felt something on my shoulder.

I grabbed Lily, pulled her close towards me and without warning a force field formed around us, expelling the hand - and the person it was attached to - to the back of the hallway, ‘GO!’ Lily screamed. This time, I didn’t look back and we ran all the way home.

My priority was to make sure Lily got home first. To avoid being seen together, I dropped her to the edge of the woods and left her to walk the rest of the way, casting a protection spell over her to ensure she arrived safely. ‘You won’t say anything about what I told you, will you?’ she pleaded as I gave her a hug and reminded her of the strength of our friendship.

Walking the rest of the journey alone, I was nervous - cautious and suspicious of the slightest sound or movement.

Not only was I shocked that I could form a force field more than once, but that it had the power to kill whatever tried to attack me.

With this realisation, I began to feel a smugness come over me. I let down my guard and focused on what new spells I could try when I got home. With my mind distracted for a minute, the next thing I knew, I was off my feet and thrown to the side of the road.

I hit my head on a tree and was left unconscious for a few minutes. After using my other senses to force my way back into consciousness, I assessed my new surroundings. I could feel the crunching of leaves beneath my hands and the sound of running water in the far distance.

My eyes were gradually focusing on a tall, black figure in front of me, splashing water on my face. The water shocked me back into reality and I could see the cause of my disorientation.

He was 5 feet 11 inches, of a muscular build, with short jet black hair and a creamy white complexion.

He helped me sit up, seemingly very concerned for my health as he assessed my eyes and limbs for damage. ‘I’m so sorry if I hurt you, but I guess we’re even now,’ he joked as my sight came back to normal and I saw this beautiful vision before me.

‘We’re even?’ I mumbled as I got back to my feet and looked around to see if there was anyone else nearby.

I raised my hands to defend myself, which seemed to amuse him even more. ‘Whoa there!’ he continued, ‘Put those guns down. I’m not here to get blasted by you again. I just wanted to check you were okay.’ I looked at him, still apprehensive of his kindness. When I finally felt happy there was no one else waiting to pounce, I lowered my hands. ‘Who are you?’ I asked, watching his every move like a hawk.

He walked towards me, put his hand on the lower area of my back and ushered me to walk through the woods with him. ‘I’m the one who helped you out back there. Is that how you thank all your rescuers?’ he joked as I looked at him with a scowl on my face.

‘I didn’t need rescuing. I could have sorted them out myself,’ I retorted as I batted his hand away and picked up my pace slightly.

My walk got ever faster and I soon broke into a run.

I ran so fast I could no longer see this mysterious stranger; I only slowed down when I saw my house ahead.

Walking through the undergrowth, I was tripped by a branch wrapped around my ankle and as I tugged and pulled at the vine, I was lifted in the air and freed from its grasp. ‘Why are you making it so hard to get to know you?’ he asked as he smiled at my attempts to push him away.‘Maybe it’s because you sweep in, try to rescue me - even though I had it under control - and now you’re stalking me without even telling me your name. Excuse me for being a bit apprehensive,’ I spat as he laughed, and I realised who or what he was … Why was he fighting his own kind?

This thought swept through my brain for a second before he read my mind and he confessed, ‘Sorry. My name is Rohan and, yes, I’m one of them - in appearance only. I just want to get to know you because I remember seeing you at school a few years ago and you seemed pretty cool back then. I wondered if you were still the same!’

I couldn’t believe this was the boy who risked his kind being exposed when we first started school by using his powers on that Namuh. I was intrigued, desperate to know more. I needed to know where he’d been and why this vampire wanted to risk it all to speak to me.

It was overwhelming, stupid of him but as much as my mind screamed its disapproval, I was curious about this mystifying being. I nodded my agreement and, with that, he kissed my hand and we vowed to find a way of spending time getting to know each other without getting caught or putting our families at risk.

Without admitting it, the sheer touch of his lips on my shaking hands made me shiver from head to toe and I knew, no matter how much I denied it, I was starting to develop more than just a thirst for knowledge about this unusual vampire.

I knew I was in trouble.

A:  “The exorcist” scares the crap out of me every time.

A:  Pumpkin spice latte

Q:  What do you like best about Fall?

A:  I adore so much about the fall season, to name a few, the cool, crispness that is in the air and the changes in the leaves. I love taking a drive through the mountains with the top down and simply behold the beauty of the season.

Q:  Truth or dare?

A:  Dare

Q:  What’s the first candy you’ll be eating after trick-or-treating?

A:  Butterfinger Mini’s. My favorite trick or treat candy since childhood.

Q:  If you could have any superpower, what would you have?

A:  To never need sleep. Oh just think of all the writing I could get done in a day. LOL

Q:  Describe your book, Coven, in two sentences.

A:  This is the first book in the tantalizing Elise Michaels Series a spinoff of The Nephilim Warrior Series. It’s an exiting adventure that will leave you breathless and wanting more.

Q:  Who is it meant to be read by?

A:  Adults 18+ there is a lot of steamy stuff in there.

Q:  Who was your favorite character to write about?

A:  I have had the best time writing from Elise POV and she is by far the most fun to write about at the moment. Although, I can foresee that writing in Aliene’s POV from the Nephilim Series in an upcoming future novel will be an experience I will never forget.

Van and I rode in silence for the first hour or so of our journey to my childhood home. I think we were both dealing with our own demons. Coming along with me on this babysitting detail was in fact a demotion for him. Although I was happy to have him along with me, as he certainly would keep things lively as well as my spirits up, I still felt bad that Eli had put him in this position.

He’d been training a lot harder lately while he considered joining one of the covert teams in their pursuit of The Hunter. That ex-brother-in-law of Anna’s had been giving both the vamps and us a run for our money. He’d kinda slipped off the radar several months ago and we all had secretly hoped he’d been ‘offed’ by a rogue vamp. He was one of the strongest and fastest vampires around, despite the fact that he was essentially a baby vamp. He was turned by the use of black magic, so it sped up the process. It usually took years for most vamps to gain his type of strength and speed; born vampires who grew into their powers and abilities during the transition that took place around their early to mid-twenties.

I was ashamed to admit that Van wasn’t the only one I felt sorry for at the moment. I had never wanted to go back to the Coven, but going back I was. It wasn’t that I didn’t have fond memories of my childhood there. I did. It was that being part of, or leading the Coven, was the equivalent of imprisonment. Well, maybe that was a little on the extreme side, but it was how I felt; how I’d always felt. The responsibility that came with protecting the secrets and traditions of the Coven didn’t lend itself to much free time. I was, and always had been, a free spirit. Adventure was never something I shied away from even when it went hand in hand with danger.

I sighed again and tried to focus on the positives of returning. One, I would be close to the sea and I adored the salty air as well as the sandy beaches that were so close to the Coven that they had been deemed our backyard. Two, I would get to see some of my closest friends that remained behind and three­­… well, there were two positives.

Van brushed the back of his hand against my cheek, breaking into my mental pep talk. I turned, smiling at him. His handsome tan face beamed with encouragement. He was aware of how hard this was for me, for both of us.

“I’m okay. Surely, things won’t be too bad. I mean, I can handle a bunch of adolescents.” Could I handle seeing him again, though? Would the pull of the spell still be as powerful as it was when I had resided there? I was positive it would.

I remembered back to the day my mother had explained the bond to me. I’d been about thirteen and Garrett and I had been caught kissing in the woods back behind the Coven. “Elise, do you recall the history of the betrothal of Coven’s leaders?” I had. Back when the Coven wanted to ensure what bloodlines would remain in leadership of the Coven, parents of both the Mistresses and Council would cast a betrothal spell, binding two infants together. They would be compelled to complete the mating bond once they reached adulthood.

“Your father and I, along with Garrett’s parents, cast such a spell on the two of you. We thought at the time it was what was best for the both of you and the Coven, but now, I’m not so sure. You are special, Elise. I have seen in a vision that you are to be paired with a warrior that all of us even wondered if she would live to see adulthood.”

I knew then what she was referring to; we’d all heard tales of the last female warrior. The one that would one day assume the throne as queen of the Nephilim. I had been beyond excited that I’d been chosen. I couldn’t wait to tell all my friends, but my mother had sworn me to secrecy. When she realized it was too much to ask of someone so young, she spelled me silent—a brilliant move on her part. It was then she warned me to control my impulses toward Garrett and I had from that moment on.

I came back to the present and my task at hand. “Anything those kiddos come up with, I’m positive I’ve already thought of or attempted it myself.”

He laughed. “Of that I have no doubt.”

“Van, I’m sorry you got roped into coming along with me.” I glanced down at my hands that I now clasped together. “I know this isn’t what you had in mind when you thought about your future.”

He reached over and took one of my hands in his. “I don’t want you thinking that way. This isn’t the future either one of us envisioned, but it is the one fate has chosen for us and I for one am not going to allow myself to question it. I’m just going to do my damndest to make the best of it and focus on the job at hand; which is keeping you alive and out of harm’s way.”

God, he was the best. “Point taken and attitude adjusted, Warrior.” I saluted him with my free hand. “Van, you know—next to Anna—you are my favorite person. Ever.” He didn’t respond, only smiled. He raised my hand that he still held tightly in his to his lip and kissed it. “Van…” I looked out the window, steeling my nerves. Seeing as how he was my closest friend next to Anna, I needed to be honest with him about everything.

Q:  For those who haven't read Halflings, describe a Halfling. And why are they not supposed to fall in love with humans (I think I always steer towards the forbidden romances)?

A:  A Halfling is a being who is half human and half angel. The human blood line isn’t to be tainted, so that’s why they’re not to fall in love with a human.

Q:  Nikki mentions reading steam punk to Mace. What kind of novels can we find her reading?

A:  None now that she will be busy saving the world!

Q:  In Guardian, Nikki meets some Halflings with Australian accents which makes them totally swoon-worthy. Which accents do you consider swoon-worthy?

A:  Almost all of them! Haha. Australian, of course. English is pretty cool. I actually pick up accents when I spend time listening to one for a while. Suddenly, I’m talking with an accent and don’t even realize it. Yeah, I crack myself up.

Q:  We find out fairly quickly that Vine, one of the Halflings, has a sweet tooth. I've caught him eating gummy worms as well as sweet tarts in Guardian. Do you have a sweet tooth? What's your favorite kind of candy?

A:  I actually am more of a chocolate lover. Candy is ok, but dark chocolate … heaven!

Q:  Zero, the Halfling computer-techy is afraid of water. Do you have any fears?

A:  I used to be terrified of frogs. I know. But I took some kids on a youth camp trip and told them that if they could find a whole page of scripture about facing your fears, I’d hold a frog in my hand. They did, and of course, I did. And I still think frogs are creepy, but I’m not scared of them anymore. Yes, we have a video of the entire thing.

Q:  When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A:  I wanted to write rock music videos.

Q:  Raven and Nikki are both drawn to motorcycles, especially Harleys and Ducatis. What would be your dream car?

A:  The Ducati in Halflings is an actual concept bike owned by the doctor my husband works with. So, when I had Vessler purchasing it, I had to throw in he bought it from a doctor in Florida. It would be pretty neat to own since it is so rare. As far as a dream car, I like Jaguars for comfort, but I’d want a convertible Camaro for fun.

Q:  Are you a dog or cat person?

A:  Since there is a twenty pound ball of feline fur warming my lap as I write this, I’m going to say cat person.

Q:  What is one book that everyone should read?

A:  The Bible. So you know, you know? Nowadays there are a lot of easy to read bibles out there. Like, The Message. It’s written in words and phrases that we use and understand. But I think the Bible is an important book. Everyone should read and form their own opinions.

Interview with Faith McKay

Q:  At the beginning of the novel, a Will Smith song is mentioned. Using my awesome detective skills, I took a guess at it being Wild Wild West. How would you describe the setting?

A:  In the center of Lacuna Valley is a tourist town with a western theme called Liberty. There are wooden sidewalks and cheesy silhouette cutouts of cowboys. The tourist cheesiness of it is set in the middle of Lacuna Valley, which actually has real cowboys. Lacuna Valley is isolated. There's not a lot of wind and the stillness creates a surreal beauty and eerie quiet. It's lovely but terrible at the same time.

Q:  Sam moves around a lot which always makes her the new kid. Did you move around a lot as a kid?

A:  Yes, I moved around a lot as a kid, and I found that while there were a lot of similarities, each time I moved the experience was a little bit different. I went to schools where the culture was to bring a new kid in and excitedly meet them, and ones where they preferred to pretend you weren't there. Prophecy Girl doesn't focus on the social aspects of her school life too much, but for the most part people are interested in there being someone new, but not too interested in her.

Q:  We learn that Sam plays the clarinet. Do you play any instruments?

A:  I played the clarinet in band and I also play piano. I love music and wish I played more instruments.

Q:  One of Sam's favorite bands is "Darryl's Grocery Bag". Is this an actual band? What is favorite genre and other bands she likes?

A:  YES! This is an actual band, though I would guess that because of the strange name, a lot of people would think that I made it up. Sam likes big band music like Glenn Miller, which is mentioned later in the book, and she enjoys punk music. She secretly has a love of Pop Punk, like Blink-182, but doesn't like to admit these things because she's sort of a hipster/music snob and likes to pretend she only listens to music that no one has ever heard of. Except The Beatles. She doesn't care who knows that she loves The Beatles, she sort of thinks of it as a musical requirement that you love The Beatles.

Q:  What was your favorite subject in school?

A:  I was really frustrated in school. I wanted to learn more, but found school to be boring and repetitive a lot of the time, and that frustration spread across all subjects equally. When I started college things were faster paced, and I fell in love with Anthropology, History, and English. My worst subject in high school and college was always Spanish. I've never had a harder time learning something.

Q:  Sam picks up a bad habit of chewing her nails when she's nervous. Do you have any bad habits or pet peeves?

A:  I cannot stand watching people chew on their nails. Ha!

Q:  If you weren't a writer, what kind of career would you like to have?

A:  You know, I've spent a lot of time thinking about this, and a lot of time trying to do other things. I like a lot of things in theory but when it comes down to doing something day in and day out, writing is really the only thing I consistently enjoy.

Q:  What is your favorite thing to do when it's snowing outside (do you like to be outside making snow angels or inside curled up next to a fire)?

A:  I like to take pictures, actually! The way light plays off snow is breathtaking, even in the night.

Q:  Age-old paranormal question: do you prefer vampires or werewolves?

A:  I never had a great answer for this, I tend to ramble on. It's easier to try and compare particular vampires versus werewolves, because I love some mythologies and think others are kind of cheap. For instance, in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the vampires had great, simple, detailed mythology. The werewolves, while a smaller part, were not so awesome. I'm a big fan of lots of other werewolf stories, however, like the Mercy Thompson series.

Q:  Favorite food to eat? Food that you would never eat?

A:  My favorite food is popcorn (I really enjoy flavored popcorns), although really it's not an enjoyable experience eating it (I always get things stuck in my teeth!). I really hate onions. A lot.

Q:  Favorite Quote?

A:  I collect favorite quotes, actually! I have a folder on my desktop that I keep files of them on different subjects. I think my favorite is probably from Helen Keller. She said, "I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do." Whenever I start to feel like the odds are against me and life is hard, I think about Helen Keller and get up and do something. :)

Q:  When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A:   A writer :) My responsible grown up alternatives were: Orca trainer (I really liked Free Willy), Marine Biologist, teacher, therapist, anthropologist. I wanted to live on islands with monkeys.

A:  Coconut with chocolate chips and gummy bears :) Like my fiction, I need something to chew on.

A:  Flying because I can't drive to Rome or Paris.

A:  Since I like a hairy guy, werewolf.

A:  Having a huge crush on my seventh grade Vice Principal and going as far as creating a fan club for him, complete with a theme song. Needless to say, I was the only member.

A:  Okay, making up for lost time, I have had some amazing dream dates that have included fast speed motorcycle races on the curving, narrow streets of a Mediterranean island.

A:  B.A. in Psychology, M.S.W (Masters in Social Work), M.F.A. in Writing for Children and Young Adults. I like school.

A:  After Lucy, the Devil's sister, gives him another shot at heaven, 17 year old Cooper is sent back to earth to meet a girl named Grace. What he doesn't know is that the two of them have a shared history.

A:  While it's young adult, I think adults and anyone with a warped sense of humor, a big heart, and a desire for a fun story will enjoy it.

Q:  Who was your favorite character to write about? 

A:  Cooper, my main character, is the perfect combination of sweet and screwed up. A good boy, who is trying so darned hard to be good. I also love Lucy, the Devil's sister. She definitely reflects my naughty, vain side.

Q:  The story starts with Chastity's mother's funeral. If you had to pick some famous (or not famous) last words to be remembered by, what would you say?

A:  “I lived intensely and loved immensely.”
As long as I was loved in the world and I loved back, that’s all that matters to me.

Q:  As Chastity grew up, we found out that she was more of a tomboy than a girly-girl. She didn't play with dolls; instead, she climbed trees and played a lot outside. What was one of your favorite pastimes as a kid?

A:  I was just as restless. I liked to play outside a lot and do a lot of exploring. Roller skating year round, even in the freezing cold, was one of my favorite childhood activities. I did play with Barbie dolls too, though. I liked their fashion and furniture. I especially liked that they had a boyfriend. I’d spend hours setting up their home and making up stories for them. Then I’d record the dialogue between my dolls on a cassette recorder I had.

Q:  Chastity drives a cherry red Jetta which I'd think would be awesome to drive while in high school.  Do you have a dream car that you'd like to be seen driving in?

A:  If I was in high school, I would love to have a Jetta. That’s why I gave Chastity this fabulous car! Mini Coopers are also cute high school cars. As an adult, I would love to drive around in a black Mercedes Sedan. It’s such an elegant car.

Q:  If you had to pick an actor or a well-known star to represent Jared, who would you pick?

A:  Jared was actually Jared Leto circa his Jordan Catalano days in my head the whole time. Here’s the exact picture of how I saw him in my head.

Q:  Chastity takes a Spanish class in high school. Do you speak any other languages besides English?

A:  I am Puerto Rican, so I speak Spanish. I also speak some Italian. I need to practice so I can become more fluent, but I do read it well and understand it.

Q:  Chastity encounters various characters throughout the novel including Amelia, Mayor Stevenson, Gavin, Susie, Kyle, Sloan, Jared, and Christopher. If you could only use five words, how would you describe each character?

A:  Amelia - A mentally ill witch
      Mayor Stevenson - A mean politician without morals
      Gavin - A conceited jerk
      Susie - The spoiled evil half sister
      Kyle - A poor insecure outcast
      Sloan - A lost soul
      Jared - The surprise under the cover
      Christopher - Another politician without morals

Q:  What is your favorite movie and why?

A:  This is a hard one because I love many movies. My dad once owned a movie theater so I’ve been in love with movies since I was a little girl. I think my all- time favorite movie would have to be Titanic. It was such a moving and vivid take on the tragedy that it made me almost hyperventilate when I witnessed it on screen. Rose’s and Jack’s love story was also amazing. I also thought Avatar was extremely meaningful. I sense a theme here… They both had the same director. I especially enjoy movies made from books. I like to read the books first, of course, so I can compare the director’s vision with my own imagination.

Q:  Chastity obtains a degree in Music Theory. What was your degree in?

A:  I have a Master’s Degree in Education in the Teaching of English as a Second Language. I’m also a full time English teacher and tutor for the Puerto Rico Department of Education.

Q:  Jared has a pet bulldog named Tonka. I have a dog named Gizmo. Do you have any pets? What are their names?

A:  I do. I love dogs!!! I have a mixed breed named Cody.

Q:  Chastity's favorite song isThis is War by Thirty Seconds to Mars. What's your favorite song?

A:  My favorite song is Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve. I love Thirty Seconds to Mars’ music so I thought about it a lot during the writing of this novel. I had also just gone to their concert here in Puerto Rico when I was in the middle of writing it. I enjoy music very much. It inspires me during the writing of my novels.
