“It is time.” Her voice purred like a kitten, but Indiana suspected she was really a feral animal on the inside.

“For what?” Her voice was raspy, hesitant and unsure if she really wanted to know the answer. Somewhere, deep inside, she suspected she already knew.

“Just remember I’m doing this for us,” Sam whispered into her ear. “So we can be together forever.”

Before Indiana could question him further, she felt a flurry of hands over her body. Indiana tried to open her eyes, but a warm hand reached up and carefully covered them.

Indiana was bitten – hard, and she groaned in pleasure. Shocked by her unexpected display, she clutched her hands outwards. Feeling the writhe of skin on skin, she tried to pull herself free. The tickle of fingers across her neck and down her spine calmed her with their warm familiarity.

“It’s okay, Indiana.”

The feathery words danced across her skin, warm like a summer breeze. She stilled and let Sam’s fingers intertwine with her own, relieved by his simple touch.

Time seemed to move forward and Indiana was presented with brief snippets of fleeting images; Camilla biting Sam, biting her. Michael Kelly’s stomach is in knots.

It’s no different than he’s felt since his promotion to Head of Population Control, except that the knots seem to tighten with each word that his second in command, Corrigan Mars, speaks. “Finally,” Corr says slowly, “we’ve got a Slip.”

Damn, he thinks, but he can’t say that. “What do we know?” he asks instead. As usual, he’s playing his role and playing it well.

“Not much,” Corr says. “Except she’s young, maybe three or four years old, female.”

“The doctor?” Michael says.

“Dead. He was particularly good at keeping secrets, even under our most sophisticated interrogation procedures. His mind was stronger than his body.”

Michael knows exactly what that means, and it makes him cringe inwardly. Torture. But he doesn’t show his revulsion on his face, his false expression stalwart and emotionless. “Just one child slipped through the cracks though, right?” Michael’s chest tightens when he realizes his mistake. His loose tongue. He called the Slip a ‘child.’ A child born illegally is no child, is nothing more than an enemy of the state, something he should know better than anyone.

Corr blinks once, but if he notices the error he doesn’t show it. Instead he only nods in confirmation. “There were others, but none had reached the age of mobility. The doctor started doing illegal births a few years back. He began slowly, as most of them do, but then ramped up operations as he gained confidence. She was his first.”

“How’d we catch the others?”

“After the first, the doc started keeping records. He used code names and misdirection, but we managed to crack the code during his interrogation. From there it was relatively easy. The Hunters tracked every last UnBee down.”

UnBees, Michael thinks, hating the slang term more than ever. Unauthorized Beings. “How many?” he asks, wishing he didn’t have to. Wishing he could walk out and never return.

“Dozens.” His old friend says it with a smile, like killing more children than can be counted on two hands is something to be proud of. When did the gap in their beliefs widen into an eternal chasm?

“Good,” Michael says, bitterness coating his tongue. “Catch the Slip. Use every resource we have available. Our careers may depend on it.”

The smile never leaves Corr’s blood-red lips. “Don’t you worry, Boss. We’ll catch her and we’ll kill her. Her parents, too.”

The moment Corrigan Mars exits his office, Michael Kelly slumps back in his chair, his body shaking with regret.

Matilda sat at her old wooden desk, staring into the thick yellowed pages of a book under a dull moth ridden beam cast by the night lamp. But every time she blinked, it seemed as if the words had played a round of musical chairs. And the moths, fluttering through the words at times and hovering over them at others, did not make things any easier.

Matilda was about to turn the page when there was a tug at her feet. It was a very gentle one, almost imperceptible. Surprised, she glanced down, but there was nothing. Perhaps it’s just my imagination, she thought. She was about to shake her thick dark brown curls out of her face when she felt it again.

Matilda pushed her head down and looked into the dark void with furrowed brow. Her skinny legs stared back. Author Interview: Felicity Heaton

Q:  Favorite coffee shop beverage?

A:  I’m a huge fan of the caramel macchiato.

Q:  Contemporary or fantasy?

A:  Fantasy every time. I like to get away from the world and slipping into a nice fantasy book or something fantasy based on TV or in a movie is a perfect escape.

Q:  When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A:  I was always looking at my feet or looking at the stars, because I could never decide whether I wanted to be an archaeologist or an astronaut.

Q:  Mountains or Beach?

A:  Mountains most of the time, as I really love the wilderness and the savage beauty of nature, and mountains always seem to encompass that sense of “wild” for me, but I have been known to enjoy a nice beach holiday, normally mixed with some local culture and beautiful old cities. My reason for hitting the beach is purely about snorkeling though. I’m not the type of girl to sunbathe with a book. I would rather be swimming with the fish.

Q:  What degree did you graduate with?

A:  I graduated with a degree in Graphic Design, which I now put to fantastic use when I’m designing all my books covers, advertising graphics, and also building my own website and newsletters.

Q:  Summer or Winter?

A:  I really like winter. Don’t get me wrong, I do love summer sunshine and blue skies. It always puts a smile on my face. I like the snow side of winter. We don’t get much of it in the UK and so I’m drawn to it. Sitting curled up in the warm while it’s a howling snow storm outside has a certain appeal.

Q:  Favorite sport to play? Watch?

A:  Favourite sport to play is archery. I’m a keen archer and shoot recurve bow, but my schedule has been too hectic to allow much practice this year. My favourite sport to watch is football, which seems to get called soccer everywhere outside Europe.

Q:  Vampire or werewolf?

A:  Vampires. I’ve always been a huge fan of vampires, and whenever I’m presented with this choice, I have to stick with them. I love werewolves too, and write both of those paranormal species, but I always have to go with my first love.

Q:  Favorite book?

A:  Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I love the whole concept of love overcoming adversity.

Q:  Describe your book in two sentences.

A:  Tempted by a Rogue Prince is a heart-wrenching paranormal romance about Vail, an elf prince on the verge of losing himself to darkness after enduring forty-two centuries under the control of a dark witch and forced to war with his brother, and Rosalind, a light witch who is brought to heal him when he’s captured by demons and a woman with a terrible prediction hanging over her head. They have to learn to trust each other in order to escape captivity and overcome Vail’s past and Rosalind’s fated future if they are to seize their forever after.

Q:  Who is your book meant to be read by?

Q:  Who was your favorite character to write about?

About the Author

N. Isabelle Blanco was born in Queens, NY (USA). At the age of three, due to an odd fascination with studying her mother’s handwriting, she began to read and write. By the time she’d reached kindergarten, she had an extensive vocabulary and her obsession with words began to bleed into every aspect of her life.

An avid reader in her teens, her fascination with Japanese anime eventually led her to the universe of fan fiction, which became her on-again, off-again hobby for the next ten years. During that time she amassed a following of fans that, by her own admission, she would never be able to live without. It was those fans who encouraged her to step beyond the fan fiction realm and try her talent in the publishing world.

N. Isabelle Blanco spends her days working as an author, web programmer, marketer, and graphic designer. That is when she isn’t handling her “spawn”, as she calls her son, and brainstorming with him about his future career as a comic book illustrator.

Excerpt

Just a note: some of the excerpts were super steamy that I needed a fan while reading them...

As well-known as the plant is, it’s only known for its processing of MSW. The perfect cover. No one suspects that a lab is situated three levels below ground.

Or that a body was brought back to life with a computer program down there.

It bothers me. It's rare that anything bothers me when it comes to a mission. Or life in general. But this one is pricking at me. Curiosity rides me.

Gage leans into the car to speak to his team right as one of the back doors of the facility opens.

Several Japanese men and women in lab coats exit first. They stop, forming a semi-circle around the entrance and talking amongst themselves. Another black haired man in a lab coat, one that is not Japanese, exits last.

I know who he is based on his file. That is Dr. Gordon Allen, the creator of the Sapphire AI.

Brilliant, thirty-four years old, and almost no one knows that he’s recently defied God.

Whatever the hell it is.

He turns back to the door. For a few seconds, all I see is his back. Then, he shifts, enough for me to catch a glimpse of the smaller figure exiting the facility.

My feet start moving the moment I do. The fuck if I know why. I’m supposed to wait by the vehicles along with the rest of my team until they lead the “cargo” to us.

Gage calls out my name in a low tone. He’s clearly as surprised as I fucking am. I don’t do impulsive moves. Don’t do total loss of body control.

I’m doing both right now.

My feet eat up the distance in a matter of seconds. The Japanese doctors tense as I storm closer, but none of them try to stop me. For some damn reason, the only thing that matters at the moment is getting close enough to truly see the resurrected Ms. Heaton.

I am man on a fucking mission.

“When did you do this?” Dr. Allen asks her in a hushed, strained tone. He’s pointing at her long, dark brown hair. The ends were dyed a deep, navy blue. “How did you get the dye?”

“I asked for it.”

Her voice hits me. God, does it hit me. And I’m sure my reaction is due to the fact that I am ninety-nine percent sure who is talking, and my mind is too fixated on the oddness, the novelty of the situation.

I stop right behind Dr. Allen. There’s a pounding rush of adrenaline coursing through me as my pulse fills my ears.

“This… this…” Dr. Allen pauses in his stuttering, the movement of his head telling me he’s looking up and down at her. “You should have worn the other outfit.”

“I… liked this one better,” she says in a small voice that mounts me, takes over, and reawakens a series of emotions that spring to life like rusty gears.

I am not an unfeeling man. Not completely. Fuck no. But the emotions going through me make me feel like I’ve been in an emotional coma the majority of my life.

She’s wearing a black button-down sweater, a navy blue school-girl skirt, black-and-white striped knee-highs, and light-brown commando boots that start right below her knee. She’s hugging a messenger bag to her chest, one with a pink-teddy bear on the front and the phrases Reality is a Prison and Sucker Punch beneath it.

“This is all too different.”

She doesn’t respond to Dr. Allen’s worried statement—she’s staring into my eyes.

Looking right at me.

That rush—that god damn rush hits me again, and I’m almost dizzy. Years of training are the only thing keeping me somewhat steady. Those big, duo-colored, gold-tinted eyes are wide, curious, and they’ve stolen every bit of processing power within my mind.

Her pale skin turns pink and her lips fall open with a shuddering inhale.

I can’t blink. I don’t move.

Am I even fucking breathing?
