Kiss of the Vampire by Cynthia Garner

Genre:  Paranormal Romance
Warriors of the Rift, Book 1

Description (taken from Cynthia Garner's website):
Half-demon, half-human, Nix de la Fuente is accepted by neither and mistrusted by both. Determined to prove she’s more human than not, she devotes herself to solving crimes between the world’s mortals and its most unsavory undead. But her latest case brings her face to face with the one vampire she could never resist . . .

Called in to investigate a string of violent murders, special agent Tobias Caine isn’t interested in rekindling his relationship with Nix. Yet one look and the vampire knows his need for her is as strong as ever. Once, their all-consuming passion nearly cost Nix her fragile hold on her humanity. Now, as their hunger for one another intensifies, exposing them to an unimaginable danger, it could cost them both their lives.

I've noticed that there are a lot of books out there that's set in a human world where the paranormal entities have been 'outed'.  This is one of those books.  But there's a major twist to how paranormals came to be in the human world.  And unfortunately, it didn't agree with me.  Maybe I didn't understand it enough or was looking for more of an explanation, but I couldn't wrap my head around it.

This book does an absolutely wonderful job at creating tension between Nix (the female lead) and Tobias (the male lead).  However, I didn't feel much else.  They are investigating murders together, but it felt more of a routine thing.  I didn't feel a great climax come around.  And the tension drove me nuts.  Even after the tension was gone, I felt like I missed out on the transition.

If you enjoy reading adult paranormal romances, then you might want to pick this one up.  However, I was left disappointed.  And it could be that my mind is just on a different paranormal frequency than what this book offered...

Thanks goes to Grand Central Publishing and Netgalley for providing me a review copy of this book.

  1. I haven't heard of this one before...so I will just forget I even saw it since you didn't find it particularly great.
