Top Ten Childhood Faves

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly post hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week's post is the Top Ten Childhood Faves.

Ooh, this one's going to be a fun one.  I wish I had all of my old books out of storage and on bookshelves.  Then I'd be able to look at them while writing this.  Oh well, guess I'll get to the list...

1.  The BFG by Roald Dahl
Roald Dahl is an amazing children's book writer.  The BFG is awesome.  Doesn't it give you happy thoughts just thinking about it?  I also enjoyed Matilda and The Witches.

2.  Circle of Magic Series by Tamora Pierce
This series would be the books that got me majorly interested in fantasy and magic.  These books were so, so good.  Also, Tamora Pierce was one of my favorite authors as a tween.
3.  Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson
I loved this book.  After reading this, I got really interested in diseases and how they spread.  That statement makes a lot of sense for me since I did study biological systems in college.  Also, I love historical fiction!!  And I continued to read Laurie Halse Anderson's books because she's an awesome writer.
4.  Helen Keller's Teacher by Margaret Davidson
I remember reading this book in elementary school.  I loved learning about Helen Keller.  Having been born with a syndrome that makes me different, I felt could somewhat relate to her hardships (and I say that very loosely because I'm neither blind nor deaf).  But knowing how hard Annie Sullivan worked and never gave up on Helen, it gave me hope.
5.  Holes by Louis Sacher
Awesomeness...  It was so fun to read this book in elementary school.  And then they made it into a movie.  The movie was pretty good, but I think the book is better.
6.  The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis
When I first picked up this book, I had no idea how much I would enjoy it.  I read it in less than two days  which was a record for me back then.  Again with the fantasy, but you should know already that I love anything fantasy...
7.  Mr Popper's Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater
I can't even remember what grade I was in when I read this.  But the ridiculousness of this book made me love it even more.  I really need to go see the movie that came out this year.  This book makes me smile and giggle...
8.  Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
I would honestly have to say that my favorite book genre as a kid was historical fiction.  I read a lot of books that were set in World War II (and a few set in World War I).  It's devastating to read about what happened in these wars, and it stinks knowing that this kind of cruel behavior still occurs nowadays (look at the Rwanda genocide).  I think it's important for kids to read books like these.
9.  Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech
A book about a journey and discovering yourself and your past.  This is such a beautifully written book.  I also believe it was the first book that made me cry.  If you haven't read it yet, you should go read it (you should read all of the books on this list).
10.  A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
I honestly judged this book by its cover and picked it up.  I do believe I actually dressed up as Meg for Halloween one year (although no one knew who I was including the teachers).  Another great fantasy read.

  2. I am so embarrassed that I forgot all about Roald Dahl! Definitely The BFG, The Witches, Matilda, and Fantastic Mister Fox. I even gave The Witches to my husband when we were dating because I was so horrified he had never read it. I also LOVED Mr. Popper's Penguins and Number the Stars. Great list!

  4. I also debated on including The BFG and A Wrinkle in Time on my Top Ten List. Although I decided to omit them, I love both of those books! I don't have my own copy of A Wrinkle in Time unfortunately but I want one!
