A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest

Genre:  YA Paranormal Romance
A Shade of Vampire Series, Book 1

Description (taken from Bella Forrest's website):
On the evening of Sofia Claremont's seventeenth birthday, she is sucked into a nightmare from which she cannot wake. A quiet evening walk along a beach brings her face to face with a dangerous pale creature that craves much more than her blood.

She is kidnapped to an island where the sun is eternally forbidden to shine. An island uncharted by any map and ruled by the most powerful vampire coven on the planet. She wakes here as a slave, a captive in chains. Sofia's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn when she is the one selected out of hundreds of girls to join the harem of Derek Novak, the dark royal Prince.

Despite his addiction to power and obsessive thirst for her blood, Sofia soon realizes that the safest place on the island is within his quarters, and she must do all within her power to win him over if she is to survive even one more night. Will she succeed? ...or is she destined to the same fate that all other girls have met at the hands of the Novaks?

Sofia spends her birthday in misery: boy troubles, what else?  But she doesn't realize the meaning of misery until she's kidnapped by a terrifying, yet intriguing guy (who also happens to have fangs).  It isn't until after she enters the Shade that she realizes she has become prey to the vampires.  But then she meets Derek, prince of his coven, who may be able to keep her safe.

For romance, this book is awesome.  It starts out with mystery in a new world, but then we see the main guy and girl interact with each other.  Coming from both points of view, we get to see how each person feels and predict how they will react.  The Shade is an interesting world; it's definitely fun to read about and imagine being there (as a vampire of course, what else would I be?).  However, the side character building is slightly lacking.  I finished the book wanting to know more about these other characters and what role they will play in this world.

A nice, quick read that will bait and hook you if you're one for paranormal romance.  I think I'll be picking up the second one to see what happens.

Thanks goes to Bella Forrest for providing a review copy.
